North Columbia Schoolhouse Plaque Unveiling

At a ceremony on September 30, at the North Columbia School House Cultural Center, the Nevada County Historical Landmarks Commission unveiled a plaque commemorating the Columbia Hill school house and its long history of serving the San Juan Ridge community. The schoolhouse was registered as a historical landmark in 1971, but for reasons lost in history, no plaque was then placed on the building. To help the many visitors who stop to admire the building and wonder exactly what it is, the Commission decided to rectify the omission and with the generous financial support of the Board of Supervisors, we had a plaque fabricated. The speakers included Kim Coughlan, whose family owns the building, and whose niece unveiled the plaque, Hank Meals, local historian, archaeologist and hiker, and architect Bruce Boyd, who has been involved in restoring and preserving the building.
